Hello, I’m Aaron Kinchen, I’m based in London and I work as a technical consultant within the IBM Security business unit. I specialise in the security Guardium product, which is a database activity monitoring solution to prevent and protect your business data while also averting the insider threat.
I’ve always learnt better by “doing”. Having the opportunity to learn and work while earning was something I did not want to miss. IBM offered a fantastic blend between on the job training and specific courses that aim to build your skills in area’s that might not be the focus of your day to day job role. This has certainly given me the flexibility to understand what I enjoy the most.
I’ve participated in numerous activities outside of my role, such as collaboration days with BT and BBC apprentices where I’ve presented some of the work I’ve done over the course of my apprenticeship. I’ve also been lucky enough to have been nominated for some external awards which has built my eminence in the wider technical community and recognition from senior executives in my business unit.
Being on the front line to protect data and prevent attacks for some of the world’s leading banks. I love the idea that I’m helping real customers solve real issues and eventually building a solution to prevent this happening again.
Despite focusing on just the one product my role varies on a day to day basis, through different projects and new challenges. I’d like to become a subject matter expert within the data security field. This might not be in the capacity of a technical consultant, it is more of an architect or client technical professional. This would involve building solutions for customers as opposed to implementing them. I’m confident that the experience and training I’ve received from the apprenticeship will help me achieve my long-term goals.
